Asphalt 7 Heat on Windows Phone – Mini Review
Put the pedal to the metal!
There have been only a few driving games released on the Windows Phone and the latest to arrive is Asphalt 7 Heat from Gameloft. Being a phone game you might not expect too much from this but you would be wrong. This game comes fully featured and has great graphics to boot.
You can choose from Career, Quick Play or Multiplayer modes. In Career mode you have 13 Cup events which each contain 4 different events. The events are made up of a variety of different challenges ranging from standard races to drifting and elimination style races. Each event grants you either 1, 2 or 3 stars depending on how many of the objectives you complete, basically the better you race, the more stars you gain.
Stars are used in the game as enablers to allow you to purchase new cars/levels, however you will be using money you earn in the races to actually make the purchases (perhaps a little confusing). For example, to unlock the Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary (and why would you not want it!) you need to have collected 100 stars which then gives you the ability to spend you hard earned $ on purchasing it.
Once you own cars, you can upgrade these too from a wide selection of options. There are multiple upgrade levels for each category: Top Speed, Acceleration, Nitro Speed, Nitro Efficiency, Handling and Armour. This gives you plenty of customization options to make your car perform better as well as change the paint, decals and tints. There seems to be no scrimping on features here and you will be hard pressed to say this is lacking on that front.
If you don’t fancy playing your career you can go straight in and fire up a quick play game. This really just does what it says on the tin, start an instant game with the game parameters you choose. You can decide on the type of game to play, the track to race on and the level of cars you want to drive. If you find it hard to make your own decision, there are handy slot machine style tumblers that you can randomize and just fire up a game of it’s choosing.
Of course if you are tired of racing against the AI, you can always choose to play multiplayer. Yes I said multiplayer, but don’t expect this to be a lame “taking turns” and “posting a time” kind of thing, oh no this is real-time competitive racing!
You can either choose to play on your local wifi against your friends or play on the Gameloft servers (think Xbox Live). From here you can choose to play an instant game, find a game that meets your mood or create one of your own. There is also a fourth option called Asphalt Academy which is a challenge mode were you compete against other racers in a weekly challenge.
The real time multiplayer is very impressive and even more so when you realise that you can play with up to 5 other players online allowing 6 player games. The implementation seems very smooth and I haven’t come across any issues yet except sometimes the lack of other players to compete against.
On top of all this, there are various goals you can complete as well as a global level you can keep improving upon. Of course there are also 200 G’s to be earned along the way which range from easy to hard making this a long term investment.
Overall this is a truly impressive mobile gaming experience, a must for any racing fan. Best of all this is currently only £0.79p! Yes, that isn’t a misprint so what are you doing still reading this go download it now if you haven’t already.
